Carlow University – Grace Library
Carlow University’s Grace Library underwent an 82,500 SF renovation providing the campus with a new, innovative University Commons for students to study, learn and collaborate in technology-rich spaces. Designed with an emphasis on critical thinking, lively discussion, and creative activity, the new facility allows students to become active participants in their learning environment.
The five-story building incorporates various audiovisual-enhanced rooms for students to collaborate on projects, practice interview and presentation techniques, share content from their laptops to wall-mounted displays and attend large presentation lectures.
Upon walking into the lobby, visitors are greeted with two flat panel screens displaying digital signage and way-finding information. The Kresge Multipurpose space supports large board meetings and instruction with a high-definition dual front projection system. Two strategically placed cameras allow for web-based videoconferencing capabilities. To optimize the acoustical response during presentations or lectures, absorptive, reflective, and diffuse materials are strategically placed throughout the room.
The Center for Digital Learning and Innovation, located on the fourth floor, features a Whisper Recording Booth and Editing Room for students to practice and engage in audio editing techniques. The space includes a computer specifically configured for audio recording/editing applications.
Preparation space for interviews and small group presentation is available in the state-of-the-art Hopkins Communications Lab. This 6-room suite offers students a place to record, review, debrief, and archive speeches and interviewing practices. Individual Interview Rooms accommodate small groups of up to three people and feature wall-mounted flat panel displays capable of video recording and computer-based collaboration. Each room also contains cameras for students to record and capture their behavior and facial expression during the interview process. The recordings can then be played-back and saved in the centralized control room for students to review and debrief.
The University Commons creates a new heart for the university providing students and faculty collaborative opportunities and technologies.
