ERIE FEDERAL COURTHOUSE COMPLEX
Erie PA
Originally a grand, imposing structure, 75 years of progress had left the Erie Federal Courthouse
Complex a building plagued with inadequate and poorly segmented space, causing significant
logistical and security concerns for jurors, judges, attorneys, and the public.
The ambitious $34 million project encompassed not only renovation, but also the
repair and consolidation of two other adjacent buildings, plus the new construction of a
courthouse annex. Recently listed on the National Register of Historical Places, the structures
were reborn as a single dramatic edifice filling one city block in the heart of downtown.
Working jointly with two separate architectural firms, The Sextant Group developed solutions
designed to deliver acoustical results consistent with stringent federal regulations across
both new construction and renovation portions of the projects. Solutions also work within
multiple design schemes without compromising historic aesthetics, and were strategically
designed to prove ultimately functional and durable, even in prisoner-environments.
Facing a myriad of acoustical challenges, the program addressed both current and future
requirements of the Federal Courts, and includes upgrading existing facilities to new
security standards.
