Western State Colorado University – Recreation Center/Field House

Western State Colorado University’s new multi-use recreation center and field house features technology systems that are effective, easy to use, and aesthetically integrated into the building’s overall design.

The 120,000 SF facility features an NCAA regulation-sized indoor track with three multi-purpose interior courts, an aquatic center, plus a full-featured fitness center and athletic weight room. Additional student-suggested amenities include a new 3,000 SF, 54-foot tall climbing tower and a 400 SF training foam pit with trampoline.

Central to the project are instructional and fitness spaces supporting innovative teaching methodologies with high-performance and flexible technology systems, including a High-Altitude Performance Lab, Wellness Center and computer classroom. Systems in various classrooms support computer-based and digital media presentation. Instructors can display digital files, high-resolution images, opaque printed materials, and 3-dimensional objects, with some spaces offering independent dual projection.

Integral to the Digital Signage system, a robust and highly flexible media system delivers traditional television and audio throughout the facility. The Fitness Center and Climbing Area offer multiple flat panel displays, and the distributed audio system allows users the ability to individually tune into any of the displays to hear the associated audio using personal headphones.

Reverberation and reflective issues throughout the field house and natatorium were ameliorated through the use of strategically-placed acoustical finishes. Difficult adjacencies posing sound isolation issues (such as mechanical rooms adjacent to classrooms, Strength & Conditioning Room above other noise-sensitive spaces) were addressed through the use of floating floors and other acoustical solutions.
