University of Florida – Harrell Medical Education Building

The University of Florida’s new George T. Harrell MD Medical Education Building aspires to be a national model for active learning and medical simulation. The 94,000 SF four-story facility is named after the college’s founding dean, and features innovative teaching laboratories designed around small group and collaborative team-based learning, state of the art information technology, specialized interdisciplinary distance learning capabilities, and a fully-wireless environment. The building is also the home for the recently-created H. James Free MD Center for Primary Care Education and Innovation.

Spaces and systems include learning studios, medical simulation bays, clinical skills and assessment, observation, classrooms, conference rooms, and collaborative small group rooms, plus informal learning spaces, digital signage, and large commons area. A state-of-the-art experiential learning theater can easily transform into a variety of settings, creating real-life scenarios to help teach students and professionals complicated, high-risk skills.

The simulation and clinical skills facilities train UF medical students and physician assistant students to practice safe, effective and compassionate clinical care through the use of standardized patients and startlingly realistic manikins, and also support accreditation requirements for UF’s residency training programs and other health science colleges.

A specially-designed (and acoustically-challenging) atrium serves as a gathering space for students, staff and faculty, providing a welcoming and pleasant entrance to the facility.

“The building is designed with the students foremost in mind,” says President Bernie Machen. “We intend for this inspirational building to become a model for the College of Medicine and for the University of Florida.”
