North Carolina State University – James B. Hunt Library

In the new 218,000 SF Hunt Library, NC State seeks nothing less than to create the best learning and collaborative space in the country. The signature, iconic building is being designed to promote interaction and collaboration among students, faculty, staff, and affiliates.

The Library Orientation area features the Immersion Theatre with a 7’ x 18’ curved videowall. In the mezzanine, a 10’ x 8’ microtile stair wall displays student art, and doubles as a giant video wall during basketball season. In the Gallery, infrastructure is in place to support interactive exhibits. Other technology-infused spaces include

Teaching and Visualization Studios: As the centerpiece of an engineering-focused campus, provide spaces for users to come together within and across different departments to visualize complex data and unique problems. Includes moveable seating, multiple projection, and AccessGridTM-type capability for engaging remote participants and incorporating multiple data sources.

Learning Commons: Includes environments where students and faculty can experiment with new technologies hands-on. Flexible furnishings and robust infrastructure accommodates tangible interface work surfaces, high resolution monitors, plus yet-to-be-developed technologies.

Digital Media Production Lab: Provides facilities for full-featured video and audio production, capture and recording. Digital tools and environments include “green screens” for high-level media production.

Gaming Area: Supports student leisure activities with sophisticated multi-configurable 64-panel wall-size “microtile” display for group gaming, plus series of flat panel displays, wireless headphones and individual gaming stations including Wii, Xbox 360, PS3 and others.

Collaborative Learning Studios: Includes collaborative clusters and workstations as well as enclosed spaces for group study, practicing presentations, and gaming. Studios configured to enable small sub-group work within the context of a larger class.

Additional systems and spaces include web-based monitoring of the 2-million volume Automated Retrieval System, plus a 100 seat lecture/event space and a high-definition telepresence / videoconference room, both with enhanced dual projection enabling two-way remote participation for high-level conferencing, scientific presentations, workshops and collaboration.
