Project Description

National Music Centre of Canada

No other cultural institution in the world is designed to honor the music of its homeland in all of its varied forms like the National Music Centre. From exhibitions to education, from artistic incubation to live performance, the new 163,000 SF facility is a catalyst for discovery, innovation and renewal through music.

NMC is home to an ever-expanding collection of unique and iconic musical instruments, sound equipment, and multimedia content that will draw visitors up into five floors of performance, education and collections spaces. Arching across Calgary’s Eleventh Avenue in the historic East Village, the architecturally-stunning building links two towers dedicated to Canada’s rich musical heritage. Each gallery invites visitors to engage and interact, starting from the moment of entry.

The Centre’s mission is to deliver an “exceptional user experience,” not only to in-person visitors, but also to virtual visitors across Canada and around the globe via the NMC website. Whether it be student, instructor, musician, or casual attendee, the entire entity is designed with a level of encompassing interactivity, so that much like musicians would play an instrument, visitors are able to “play” this building.

A 300-seat performance hall highlights The Centre. The venue hosts a variety of events including live concerts, performances, and lectures. Also featured in this hub for music lovers is a broadcast studio for CKUA Radio. The studio is CKUA’s first publically accessible radio station in Calgary.
Other features include
• Collections and Performance Galleries
• Rehearsal Spaces
• Café
• Education Center

The Sextant Group fulfilled a unique role with the Owner – initially as visioneer and coach, the firm envisaged and articulated The Centre’s vision for an enterprise-class technology environment.

Working on behalf of NMC, The Sextant Group produced a Request for Proposal document consisting of drawings and performance specifications in alignment with NMC’s desires and functional requirements. Our work product resulted in NMC partnering with Bell Canada to deliver technology services for the project.
