National Music Centre of Canada
No other cultural institution in the world is designed to honor the music of its homeland in all of its varied forms like the National Music Centre. From exhibitions to education, from artistic incubation to live performance, The Centre is to be a catalyst for discovery, innovation and renewal through music.
NMC is home to an ever-expanding collection of unique and iconic musical instruments, sound equipment, and multimedia content that will draw visitors up into five floors of performance, education and collections spaces. Arching across Calgary’s Eleventh Avenue in the historic East Village, the architecturally-stunning building links two towers dedicated to Canada’s rich musical heritage. Each gallery invites visitors to engage and interact, starting from the moment of entry.
The mission is to deliver an “exceptional user experience,” not only to in-person visitors, but also to virtual visitors across Canada and around the globe via the NMC website. Whether it be student, instructor, musician, or casual attendee, the entire entity is being designed with a level of encompassing interactivity, so that much like musicians would play an instrument, visitors will be able to “play” this building.
Functioning as “executive producer”, The Sextant Group occupies a unique translator role between owner and designer – as visioneer and coach, the firm’s role is to envisage and articulate The Centre’s vision for an enterprise-class technology environment, and then direct/coordinate/manage the consortium of technology providers in the realization of that vision. The Sextant Group also will maintain an intimate, long-term relationship with NMC as keeper of that vision, guiding it through the coming decade and assuring that the “exceptional user experience” is maintained long into the future.
